Many people may hear about Periodontal Disease and have no idea what it actually is. At Horizon Dental Care, we offer periodontal care, so why is this so important to you?
Periodontal disease is an infection that affects your tissues and bones that support your teeth. When you have healthy gums your tissue around your gums will form like a cuff around each of your teeth. If you have periodontal disease, the gum tissue will pull away from your tooth or teeth. If the disease progresses, the tissue and bone that hold the tooth are damaged. As time goes on, your teeth could eventually fall out, or need to be removed. The key to periodontal disease is to treat it early.
If you’re wondering if you have periodontal disease, here are a few signs to look for:
- Bleeding gums when you floss or brush
- Gums that are swollen, red or tender
- Halitosis (bad breath) that can’t be resolved by brushing
- Gum recession
- Tooth loss or separation
- Pus around your teeth and gums
Periodontal disease is caused by plaque. The plaque has bacteria in it that produces harmful toxins. When your teeth are not cleaned properly, these toxins can aggravate and inflame the gums. Plaque can be removed through your regular dental habits such as brushing and flossing. If the plaque remains on your teeth for long periods of time, it hardens into tartar, and will need to be removed at your dental office.
